Good news concerning sustainability: the Lufthansa Group is extending its use of sustainable alternative jet fuel. On its flights from San Francisco to Frankfurt/Main, Munich and Zürich, Lufthansa will use fuel blended with so-called sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This alternative jet fuel is biological in origin and its use reduces up to 80% of CO2 emissions compared to fossil-based jet fuel.
The Lufthansa Group takes its responsibility towards the environment very seriously and has already launched many initiatives aiming to reduce the CO2 emissions of its airplanes.
The current initiative involves a contract between the Lufthansa Group and Shell to deliver a million gallons (about 3.8m litres) of SAF which is produced by World Energy in a refinery in Paramount, California.
The Lufthansa Group has much experience using and supporting the development of alternative jet fuel. The use of this fuel on a daily basis on flights from San Francisco is a good first step into the future and will allow passengers to travel CO2-reduced.
